Alienware AW2723DF 27" 1440p 240Hz Gaming Monitor Review

Screen Size and Resolution

  • The Alienware AW2723DF is a 27-inch gaming monitor with a resolution of 2560 by 1440p.

  • The pixel density (PPI) is about 109, which ensures a crisp and clear image.

"This brings it to about 109. [...] images, games, movies all appear very crisp and clear."

Panel Type and Refresh Rate

  • The monitor features a nano IPS panel, most likely manufactured by LG.

  • It has a native refresh rate of 240Hz, with a factory overclock up to 280Hz.

  • The overclocked refresh rate can be adjusted in the menu system.

"This is a nano IPS panel which [...] is hitting 240 hertz natively but then having a factory overclock up to 280 Hertz."

VRR Technology and HDR Capability

  • The monitor is equipped with FreeSync Premium Pro, allowing for variable refresh rate (VRR) and enabling HDR simultaneously.

  • Although it lacks a G-SYNC chip, it is NVIDIA certified as G-SYNC compatible.

  • The HDR rating is HDR 600, providing a wide color gamut and vibrant colors.

"The FreeSync Premium Pro is great, it's NVIDIA certified, everything works well [...]. Overall gaming in HDR is very enjoyable, especially because of the colors."

Brightness and Reflections

  • The AW2723DF has a brightness rating of 600 nits, with actual measurements reaching about 580 nits in SDR content.

  • The monitor's high brightness helps reduce reflections and enhances vibrant visuals.

  • Unlike most gaming monitors, it features a hybrid matte-glossy finish, improving image clarity.

"This is extremely bright and vibrant and enough brightness where it keeps away reflections. [...] It increases clarity of the image substantially."

Colors and Color Accuracy

  • The monitor covers 95% of the DCI P3 color space, offering rich and vibrant colors.

  • The glossy hybrid matte finish contributes to better color quality and image clarity.

  • The Creator mode provides options for color space and gamut selection, making it suitable for color-accurate work.

"This is just awesome to have this amount of refresh rate and colors. [...] Better than I was expecting really."

Final Verdict

  • Taking into account the price, resolution, and an 80Hz difference compared to higher-end monitors, the AW2723DF offers excellent value.

  • Although it does not have the deep blacks of OLED or mini LED panels, it still delivers a great overall gaming experience.

"This is probably just about as good as you can ask for. [...] Overall, this is great to have this amount of refresh rate and colors."

Color Accuracy and Gamma

  • The gamma was initially set to 2.2 uncalibrated, which hit 2.3, but after calibration, it hit 2.19, which is perfect.

  • Out of the box, the color temperature is accurate and visually appealing.

  • This monitor is particularly suitable for gamers, but also great for content creators who work with photo and video editing.

"The overall point here is this is beautiful for gamers... it's very, very pretty actually as far as colors."

Contrast Ratio and Backlight Bleed

  • The contrast ratio is typical for IPS panels at 1000:1.

  • There was a small amount of backlight bleed, but it was barely noticeable during gameplay.

  • The issue with backlight bleed may be due to the early production process of the unit, and Alienware's quality control is generally reliable.

"However, this is a quality control issue... if it does happen to your panel, obviously just send it back for a replacement."

Response Time, Ghosting, and Input Lag

  • The claimed response time of 1ms is not accurate, but it performs well regardless.

  • With variable refresh rate enabled, ghosting is minimal in the Extreme setting, which is recommended.

  • Without variable refresh rate, there is some pixel overshooting in the Extreme and Super Fast settings, so it's best to have it enabled.

  • Input lag is exceptionally low, comparable to other high refresh rate monitors.

"It does extremely well... There's very, very little ghosting... if you're looking for super high refresh rate and 1440p, I do think this is the better monitor to get."

  • The controls, including a single joystick, are intuitive and easy to use.

  • The dedicated power button with customizable RGB lighting is a nice addition.

  • The menu system is functional but could be better organized and visually appealing compared to LG monitors.

"Controls are great here with a single joystick... the best system... the menu system itself is typical Dell and Alienware, it's functional, it's pretty intuitive, there are a lot of different settings."

VESA Compatibility and Ports

  • The monitor is compatible with 100mm x 100mm VESA mounts, making it easy to mount.

  • It has two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4, one USB Type B upstream, four USB Type A downstream, and two 3.5mm audio outs.

  • The USB ports are conveniently placed for easy access and charging devices.

"If you do want to mount this, it's quite easy... it has two HDMI 2.0s, one DisplayPort 1.4, one USB Type B upstream, and then four USB Type A downstream."

Stand and Build Quality

  • The stand and build quality are excellent, as expected from Alienware.

  • The materials, sculpting of the plastics, and overall design are top-notch.

  • The matte off-white finish, bezel size, and cable management are all well-executed.

"The stand and build quality is absolutely fantastic... the materials are good... it's well put together... bezels exceptionally small... cable management is absolutely fantastic."

Overall Verdict

  • The Alienware AW2723DF is highly recommended for gamers and content creators.

  • It offers great color accuracy, low input lag, and minimal ghosting.

  • The menu system and controls are functional but could be improved.

  • The stand and build quality are impressive, and the monitor is VESA-compatible.

"If you're looking for super high refresh rate and 1440p, I do think this is the better monitor to get."

Design and Build Quality

  • The monitor has micro bezels, making it more attractive.

  • It features RGB lighting on the power button, which can be customized through the menu system.

  • There is a bright "27" on the back and an Alienware logo on the side.

  • The lights on the back are inconsistent in their brightness when hitting the wall due to the size difference between the "27" and the logo.

"Out of the box that does fade away like bezels don't really matter that much in monitors but it just does look more attractive there's no getting around that."

Quirks and Features

  • The monitor has a headphone stand on the left side, but the tension for rotation is too loose.

  • The weight of a heavy headset can shift the monitor when using the headphone stand.

"Now, these get very bright and they do end up hitting the wall, however, it's inconsistent when it hits the wall because the 27 is bigger overall than the Alienware logo. That's always been dumb to me; I don't know why they're doing that. It looks cool if you're looking at the back of the monitor, but if it's hitting the wall, I usually end up just turning those lights off and just keeping that power button on."

"This one's stand is not quite as tight, and that's totally fine for the monitor, but the tension for the rotation is a little bit too loose. So with my Corsair virtuosos, and they are a fairly heavy headset, but when I put them on there, it actually shifted the monitor over a little bit. So, it was a no-go for me. I'm never going to use that headphone stand to make this usable. They would absolutely have to tighten the tension on that rotation a little bit because, well, my virtuosas, I guess, are just too heavy."

Price and Value

  • The monitor is priced at $649.99.

  • For those seeking a 240Hz refresh rate, wide color gamut, vibrant image, and low input lag, this monitor offers a premium experience.

  • Comparing it to the 360Hz Asus monitor, which is priced at $1,049.99, this Alienware monitor provides 98% of the consumer experience at a substantially lower price.

"If this is what you're looking for, and by that I mean a 280Hz refresh rate, a beautiful vibrant image with wide color coverage, a bright screen, and super fast gamer performance with extremely low input lag, and a premium standard build quality with micro bezels, then yes, this is absolutely worth it."

"For that price tag, when probably in a year or two years, we'll have 360Hz 1440p monitors everywhere, whereas right now, for this price point at $649.99, around 650 bucks, this is giving you a lot of that experience for a substantially lower price point."
